Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (Book Review)
One of the most influential bestsellers of all time is the book Think and Grow Rich Published by Napoleon Hill in 1937, which sold about 100 million copies as of 2015.
Napoleon Hill interviewed more than 500 of the richest men and women of the early 19th century, most of whom grew up lacking wealth. It took about 20 years to compile the principles of wealth he got from these people into a book that contains 13 main principles anyone can change his or her way of thinking to become wealthy.
Napoleon Hill emphasizes how what we think about plays a significant role in determining what eventually becomes our reality. He tells about how people were compelled to think of poverty following the Wall Street crash of 1929. Their thought crystallized to become its physical equivalent, which was known as a 'Depression'.
Think and Grow Rich contains Sixteen Chapters, of which Thirteen explains the principles on how anyone can changing his/her thinking and become rich. The 13 Principles are outlined below:
- Desire: The Starting Point of all Achievement
- Faith: Visualizing and Believing in the Attainment of Desire
- Autosuggestion: The Medium for Influencing The Subconscious Mind
- Specialized knowledge: Personal Experiences
- Imagination: The Workshop of The Mind
- Organized Planning: The Crystallisation of Desire into Action
- Decision: The Mastery of Procrastination
- Persistence: The Sustained Effort Necessary to Induce Faith
- Power of the Master Mind: The Driving Force
- The Mystery of Sex Transmutation
- The Subconscious Mind: The Connecting Link
- The Brain: A Broadcasting and Receiving Station For Thought
- The Sixth Sense: The Door to The Temple of wisdom.
Another exciting thing about Think and Grow Rich is that Hill used real-life stories with great lessons. After weeks of labour, the story is told about a man who discovered a shining ore in the ground. He needed machinery to bring the ore to the earth's surface, so he got some money from some of his relatives, purchased the needed machinery, and got back to work. He and his nephew drilled and hauled gold from the ground to the earth's surface until they eventually found no gold. They kept drilling for an extended period and found nothing in the ground.
Finally, they decided to quit; they sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars.
Some 'junk' men are dumb but not this one. He called in an Engineer who examined the place and advised that the project had failed because the owners were not familiar with 'fault lines.' His calculations showed that the veins would be found just three feet from where they had stopped drilling! Eventually, that was where the gold ore was found.
More than 500 of the most successful people America has ever known told the author that they succeeded just one step beyond the point defeat or failure had overtaken them.
