When Opportunity Meets Preparation

The biblical David was a young, handsome and healthy man who was faithful in taking care of his father’s flocks. Although his elder brothers may have seen it as a menial job he used the opportunity to master a skill which went a long way to announce him. He kept on building capacity until a certain day he had the opportunity to go to the battle line to see his brothers. There he saw the giant called Goliath who challenged the Israelite army every morning and evening for 40 days to bring forth a person to fight him. He was confident that none of the Israelites could defeat him but unknown to him, David the son of Jesse had built capacity while taking care of his father’s animals.

Sometimes what we see as a disadvantage, menial job, or even as a waste of time if only we can look critically at that thing, we would see an opportunity in it. For instance, a story is told of a man who came to a community to sell shoes but on reaching there, he discovered that the people there didn’t wear shoes. He went back to were he came from without making any sales. But another man came there to sell shoes, when he saw everyone barefooted, he saw it as an opportunity to sell a lot of shoes to them there.

Going back to my point, David had killed many wild animals while taking care of his father’s animals. He had mastered that skill to the point that when he saw the giant, he knew within him that he could defeat him. There was strong confidence within him.

He took advantage of the opportunity, then he mastered his craft, so when the opportunity came for him to deliver the Israelite from their enemies, he was prepared to execute well.

Opportunities to learn different skills come to us many times but we fail to see it because they don’t present themselves the way we expect, like the biblical David, it is necessary to see/read in between the lines when opportunities present themselves before us. As a result when the time for us to execute what we have mastered comes, we would be prepared to execute correctly.

Don’t forget to share it with your friends and family. If you find this very helpful, I'm sure being part of an outstanding community such as our Facebook Group to get updates on the latest gist and intellectual information will not be as an option. Do well to leave us a comment on the comments section below.
